During hot days, air conditioners operate almost continuously and are also the main reason for higher electricity bills. According to statistics from Vietnam Electricity (EVN), air conditioners can account for up to 40–60% of a household’s total electricity consumption.

However, with regular cleaning and gas refilling, users can save 10–20% of monthly electricity consumption. During use, dust easily accumulates on the filter, indoor unit, and outdoor unit, obstructing airflow and forcing the machine to run longer to reach the desired temperature. An uncleaned air conditioner can consume 5–15% more electricity than a clean one. In addition to energy loss, dust also creates a favorable environment for bacteria and mold, affecting indoor air quality.

The cleaning cycle of an air conditioner depends on usage intensity and environment. For households running the air conditioner frequently for 6-8 hours per day, cleaning should be done every 3-4 months. If used less, under 4 hours per day, cleaning once every 6 months is appropriate. Public spaces such as offices, shops, or cafés, where the unit must run continuously in dusty environments, should be cleaned every 1-2 months. The filter, however, can be washed at home every 2-3 weeks to maintain good airflow, while deep maintenance still requires a technician.

In addition, gas refilling is equally important. Refrigerant gas determines the cooling performance of the unit. If the system is sealed, the air conditioner can operate stably for 3-5 years without requiring additional gas. However, in reality, leaks at joints and pipes gradually deplete the gas. Signs such as the room not cooling enough despite continuous operation, frost on the indoor unit or copper pipes, water leaking from the indoor unit, or unusual noises indicate gas shortage and the need for immediate inspection. Timely gas refilling not only helps the unit operate efficiently but also prevents damage to the compressor, the most expensive part of the system.

In addition to maintenance, certain usage habits can also help save a significant amount of electricity. Users should set the air conditioner temperature at 26-28°C, use a fan to distribute cool air evenly, always keep doors closed to prevent heat loss, and take advantage of Eco or Dry modes on mildly hot days. Cleaning and refilling the air conditioner gas is not only a maintenance task but in fact an effective energy-saving solution in the context of rising electricity prices. Proactively scheduling regular maintenance, detecting abnormal signs early, and maintaining proper usage habits will help households both control living expenses and improve indoor air quality, while also extending the lifespan of the equipment for many years.
